For 25 years, the Tobacco Alliance has represented the rights of independent retailers to sell tobacco in a legal and responsible way. Through our ‘Retailers Against Smuggling’ campaign, we have fought to reduce the black market in tobacco which poses a significant threat to small shops which rely on sales of tobacco. Last year we launched 'Responsible Retailers,’ a new initiative to encourage and promote responsibility in retailing tobacco and to highlight the positive work being undertaken by independent retailers in reducing underage sales of tobacco.

Now independent retailers of tobacco products are facing a greater threat than ever before. Current government proposals to ban the display of tobacco in shops would disproportionately impact on small shops and displace trade to larger outlets, as well as boosting the black market in tobacco. Similar proposals to prohibit the sale Retailers are rightfully concerned about these proposals. In response to this, we have re-branded as the Tobacco Retailers Alliance.

Meanwhile, the black market trade in tobacco continues to pose a threat to legitimate retailers of tobacco, as well as providing an avenue of access to tobacco by young people.

Joining the Tobacco Retailers Alliance is free of charge and offers retailers numerous benefits. As well as becoming part of an effective campaigning machine, you will receive updates on tobacco issues that affect your business and advice on best practice.
